Take 3 minutes to watch and you'll instantly become more compassionate.

Karen Armstrong received a coveted TED prize; it is awarded annually to three individuals who each receive $100,000 and, more important, the granting of "One Wish to Change the World."   Armstrong's wish is to create a Charter for Compassion.

As described on the TED site, "The Charter brings together the voices of people from all religions. It seeks to remind the world that while all faiths are not the same, they all share Religious thinker Karen Armstrong has written more than 20 books on faith and the major religions, studying what Islam, Judaism and Christianity have in common, and how our faiths shaped world history and drive current events, the core principle of compassion and the Golden Rule."

In teaching social skills to kids in an after school program, WINGS helps elementary school age students learn empathy, the ability to step into the shoes of another.  Through activities after school, our kids become compassionate.  Perhaps, we'll get involved the writing of this Charter for Compassion.

If nothing else, take 3 minutes to watch the video - it will make your heart soar and you'll become a much more compassionate person instantly.

Join the world at www.charterforcompassion.org to write the Charter for Compassion.

I attended a panel

I attended a panel discussion that was hosted at a Unitarian Universalist Church, and I was amazed at their focus on "I understand others are unique. I want to learn more about everyone I meet." They never quoted those line from the WINGS creed, but they were the personification. I am not a member, so i asked "What exactly is the Unitarian belief?" Surprisingly, a 14 year old member of the church replied "We believe that people of all faiths can hold tightly to their own faith and attend a church service with people of different faiths." The congregation is diverse, believe in different higher beings, but all learn about each other. I am mentioning my experience with this church because it goes along with the 3 minute video!

Golden Rule is all about empathy

We teach our kids to "step inside the shoes" of others. The Golden Rule encourages people to treat others how you want to be treated. In other words, step in side their shoes to see if you would want to be treated that way. I agree that regardless of your religious affiliation, the golden rule is appropriate to follow. All people should care for others and be compassionate. What a great idea Charter for Compassion has. Great website.
