It’s easy to get discouraged about the mess this world is in. Just watch this new video (caution: slow-loading! but worth it!) on the Girl Effect and feel flooded with hope.

“What if there was an unexpected solution that could turn this sinking ship around?” it asks. The solution? Invest in a girl, she will do the rest. You will want to see HOW.

At WINGS we see how the investment in teaching social and emotional skills to kids through after school programming gives them the foundation they need to soar. No question about it, this is the way to help kids living in poverty – one at a time.

As the video says: “It’s no big deal – just the future of humanity.”

If you want something done right now, get a woman.

My favorite line from that video is "Invest in a girl, she'll do the rest." It's been a battle for women to gain recognition from men, but nonetheless, it's the battle that gives women determination to advance in life. Being a female and a WINGSLeader, I want to be a role model for all the young girls in WINGS. I want to be the big sister that they look up to, or the strong female they would like to be someday. I go to work everyday, hoping that in the future, at least one girl will use the SEL skills WINGS teaches in her life, graduates high school, goes to college, obtains a job, and has a family. I invest in these girls everytime I show up for work, and I end my day knowing that one of them will change the world, just as I hope to do. Our SEL skills are like the cow that's purchased for the girl....and hopefully it produces success.

building success

As apart of our intentional SEL curriculum, we teach kids to get motivated by recognizing that small successes build on one another! So i think "the Girl Effect" is a perfect example of this. Just think that the small success of one girl can build up to the success of humanity! I think it is difficult to remember that great triumphs aren't accomplished in a day, but one day at a time. Personally, i think about the BIG picture when reaching for a goal. Its always great to keep the big picture, but that can be overwhelming. So instead of trying to fill my head with a gigantic photograph, i have to learn to focus on the smaller pixels that build that photo.
