As the inauguration nears, we thought readers would like to know the results of our public survey of how the candidates stack up in terms of their emotional intelligence.

People who completed the survey think Obama has higher EQ than McCain two to one.  Ditto for Biden vs Palin.

The highest single score went to Obama for Self Management - not surprising since the public views him as someone who can stay cool under pressure.  The lowest score went to Palin for Responsible Decision Making.

So if you are planning to run for office, we suggest you hone your social and emotional skills!  It’s never too late.

President Obama Soars with WINGS

Each line of the WINGS Creed touches on valuable skills that are not only important for the President of the United States to display, but the average citizen as well. Think how much better our world would be if everyone: loved and accepted themselves and shared their emotions, controlled themselves when life's surprises were thrown their way, understood that they should make the choices that are best for them and didn't blame others for their mistakes, understood that everyone is different and tried to get to know more about those difference in others by stepping into their shoes, and showed support and trust to those around them in an effort to work together and succeed. President Obama is able to display all of these skills and in doing so has inspired the nation. The next four years won't be easy, but with a high emotional intelligence, I feel he is the perfect man for the job. As I work with the WINGS kids each day I honestly believe that they are learning from the social skills activities we teach and will one day soar, maybe higher than Obama! Think With Your Head vs. Your Heart --- How About Both?

Being President is, no doubt, one of THE biggest responsibilities to have in the country. All eyes are constantly on you, and every decision you make affects not just one person, but a whole nation. I am proud of America for choosing someone who knows how to manage himself, and who is capable of making good, responsible choices. It's been a rough 8 years, and there's a mess to clean up, but I feel comfortable knowing soon-to-be President Obama is able to think with his head and his heart. This is truly one of the most emotional elections I have witnessed.

Not Surprising

The results from this poll don't surprise me...but they do excite me! Isn't it exciting (and inspiring) to know that social and emotional skills can pay off - in one of the biggest ways - like they did for Obama? We all aren't going to be President someday, but we can shoot for the stars. Obama really forces us to up our skill set and ability to exhibit self-control, develop good relationships, and dream big. Not only that, he calls us to take action and become a leader - whether in our home, our office, or our community. Onward!
