President Obama's remarks to America's schoolchildren today were a tribute to the importance of social and emotional smarts. Skills like self-awareness, setting goals, persevering in the face of difficulties, focused listening and asking for help are all components of a strong social and emotional education. I was especially struck by his message that kids owe to to themselves and their country to discover their personal strengths when he said: "Every single one of you has something you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is."

Self-awareness is the

Self-awareness is the building block to having a positive social and emotional experience. Possessing a strong knowledge of self will lead to understanding your emotions, how to appropriately react in a situation, as well as how to build healthy relationships. At WINGS this nine weeks, WINGSLeaders have social skills activities planned that kids will participate in to further their knowledge of themselves. President Obama is right when he said that kids owe it to themselves to discover personal strengths. As people, young and older, become more self-aware, they are building themselves to lead better socially and emotionally powered lives.

First 9 weeks of WINGS

During the first nine weeks of WINGS, kids will be learning a lot about self-awareness. It is the first social and emotional skill we focus on because it is the building block for all of the other skills. The kids will participate in a variety of social skills activities while learning and having A LOT of fun. It is great to see that the President of our country understands the importance of these skills as well. The more people in the world that build these skills, the better off we will be!
