It's easy to see why Boulder, Colo., and its scenic vistas made the list, and a frigid winter makes balmy Honolulu a safe bet, but why on earth is Holland, Mich., high on the list of the happiest towns in America? In a state with one of the worst economies in the nation and a bitterly cold climate, Holland nonetheless came in second in a Gallup poll that measures the "well-being index." Turns out this small town scores very high on healthy behaviors, emotional well-being and a strong sense of community. There's a culture of giving, 100 volunteer organizations, caring folks who lend a helping hand and a host of other behaviors that have nothing to do with how much money people make. Says the characteristically cheerfuly mayor: "If a small community located in the state with the worst economy can feel good about itself, seems to me we've got hope in the country."
