More and more leadership training in the workplace focuses on developing the social and emotional skills that WINGS teaches kids in the early elementary school years. Here's a video of Yvette Vignando of Emotional Intelligence Development Australia explaining why emotional intelligence ought to be an essential part of the curriculum in every school - transforming kids into "better learners, more connected, better behaved."

I like touchy-feely

If all educators think about the moments they remember in school or in their organization, it is the touchy-feely moments. The moments that make the audience go, "Aww..." are the ones that people are fond of. As I teach social and emotional learning skills in the after school program, WINGS, I can not help but to think that there can be a way that kids can learn social and emotional learning skills and academics without the yelling or strict discipline. A perfect example of WINGS creating touchy-feely moments is our Choice Times. Choice Times are fun activities where WINGSLeaders tie in the social and emotional objective of the week. Many moments happen in this 45 minute time period....and all while children are learning the social and emotional learning skills to help them become successful, healthy and happy.
