Harvard Spotlights WINGS Use of Performance Management Data
Sharing valuable lessons we've learned with others in the field

Sharing what we've learned is part of our work at WINGS. So we're pleased that Harvard published CEO Ginny Deerin's account of how WINGS uses a continuous stream of performance management data to improve our program model. The article appears in the Harvard Evaluation Exchange, published by the Graduate School of Education, in the spring issue exploring the "promising practices" for taking an enterprise to scale and what role evaluation should play.
At the heart of WINGS' strategic plan and evaluation efforts in preparation to scale up is a state-of-the-art online system called Efforts to Outcomes. Although WINGS has been results-driven since our start in 1996, implementing a performance management system has yielded many benefits:
- We've sharpened our focus by clarifying what factors drive our educational outcomes.
- Detailed, easy-to-access records allow managers to monitor whether whether we're implementing the program with fidelity to the model.
- Real-time feedback offers powerful motivation for staff in aligning efforts to outcomes.
- Continuous flow of data pinpoints whether individual participants are mastering the skills needed to reach the outcomes so we can intervene for maximum effectiveness.
