Over the last few months, a bright spotlight has been shining on bullying with a big focus on the tragedy of Rutgers freshman, Tyler Clementi.  After being cyber-bullied by his roommates for being gay, Clementi took his life by jumping off the George Washington Bridge.  In a lot of ways Clementi’s tragedy broke the silence on bullying – and everyone is talking. (Did you see Ellen's video message?)

WINGS has had an increase in people reaching out to us for ways to help sons, daughters, friends and communities combat bullying.  Being one of the only U.S. organizations that focuses on social and emotional learning in an after school setting, it does not surprise me people are catching on to the work we’re doing and wanting us in their lives.  Two weeks ago, two local news stations in Charleston featured WINGS as the lead story on fighting bullying in our youth.  We teach kids the skills to be yourself against bullying. WATCH HERE.

What does surprise me is that 95% of the outreach we receive does not come from Charleston, SC.  There is a regional – national – universal need for WINGS in our schools.  Parents and educators are desperate to stop the tragedy of events that seem to be replaying in school yards across the country.  WINGS is not just an after school program – it’s an education program that gives kids the skills to say “I love and accept who I am on the inside.”  And, to anyone who loves kids – those words are a huge sigh of relief.
