Why is the parking lot so full?

Every January my health club’s parking lot becomes very full. This can be extremely frustrating because during the other 11 months of the year I have my choice of parking spot. I call it the “New Year’s Rush.” A lot of people decide to make a New Year’s resolution to join a gym and get fit. Unfortunately, their energy and motivation begins to dwindle by February.

In a couple of weeks we will be working with our kids on strategies to keep agreements they make with themselves or others. We use the acronym “Uphold” to teach this.

U: Understand: Make sure you know exactly what you are saying
P: Possible: Make sure you can actually do what you are saying
H: Hear/Listen Make sure you know the details of the agreement (when,
what, where)
O: Obstacles What can get in your way, get rid of those things
L: List Come up with all the things you should/can do
D: Do Do everything you can to make it happen

UPHOLD is one of the many social and emotional lessons we teach the kids. See others here: http://www.wingsforkids.org/experience/hot-wings

As you make your resolutions, I encourage you to go through the steps of UPHOLD so you are able to keep the commitment.

I don’t mind searching for a parking spot if it means more people are achieving their New Year’s goals.
