Peek inside the classrooms of a Brooklyn public school and see social and emotional learning at work, in this video from a report on The NewsHour with PBS's Jim Lehrer. The 4 Rs program they use - Reading, Writing, Respect, Resolution - was developed by the Morningside Center, which is working to advance social and emotional education in this country. As founder Tom Roderick says, "When people work together in a cooperative way to solve problems, then we can do anything!"

For 30 years, studies have shown that Denmark is the happiest nation in the world. More than two-thirds of Danes report being "very satisfied with their lives." James W. Vaupel, a demographer who's investigated the findings, says it's a function of their expectations, which are not too high, and a focus on the here and now. Teaching kids to understand their own expectations and how to regulate them means they, too, can be happier people!

Quick - how many feelings can you name? Here's an alphabet of feelings. At WINGS, we help kids develop their social and emotional intelligence from a very young age by starting with that question - what are some feelings? It's amazing how quickly they learn to recognize emotions besides "sad," "happy" and "mad" once they get going.

There's a great new iPhone application called DoGood that serves up an inspiring idea of the day. Dreamed up by 3 University of Michigan graduates, the newly launched application encourages users to perform one small and simple kindness, with the vision of uniting all these collective acts into a significant movement. When they launched, the creators said: "We felt the world could use an app like DoGood - which, by it's very nature, is free." These guys define emotional intelligence - and bring it to the palm of your hand!
