Budget Ax Falls on After School Programs

 The recession is squeezing after school programs along with everything else. The Afterschool Alliance reports that 10% of the officials they surveyed were planning to close or shrink programs, and that number is growing, according to the Wall Street Journal, as the budget ax falls.

“A critical safety net for working parents is unraveling, and many are bracing to pay a hefty price,” the Wall Street Journal article said.

So's the website run by parent organization the George Lucas Educational Foundation, enthusiastic supporters of social and emotional learning. Now Edutopia is reaching newsstands at Barnes & Noble and other bookstores for the first time, so look for it and spread the word.

Jonah Lehrer wrote in the May 18, 2009 issue of The New Yorker an article titled "Don't. The Secret of Self Control."  It highlights yet again an experiment that took place in the 60's - a marshmallow test - made famous by Dan Goleman in his book emotional intelligence.  Nursery school kids were asked to sit in a room alone; each was given a marshmallow.
