They Have WINGS

Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company

A Lowcountry staple since 1947, and favorite grocer of WINGS, said goodbye this month to many of its patrons in the chain's hometown, Charleston.

Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company, affectionately known by its customers as, "The Pig," is selling off 11 stores in the tri-county area, including their No. 1 Meeting Street store just across from our Soarporate Office.

Their absence will not only bring frowns to the faces of their regular shoppers and fans- including our staff who walk over nearly every day for lunch and snacks- but will also leave a huge hole in Charleston's philanthropic community.

From very early on, the Schools family- first Burt followed by son David- invested in WINGS, and without their unwavering support, it would have been a struggle to serve the 3,500+ kids we've impacted over the last 17 years. Since our founding in 1996, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company has supported WINGS efforts in Charleston's schools giving over $18,000 in funding and more than $5,000 worth of in-kind goods to our program and kids.

Mr. Pig, the beloved mascot of Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company, has also made several visits to see our kids and support our programs over the years.

To show our love, appreciation, and gratitude, let's take a heartfelt trip down memory lane...

Mr. Pig recites the WINGS Creed! Boy, do we love him!

Can you spot Mr. Pig dancing with us in 2009 to help raise money during our 48-hour Dialin' & Dancing fundraiser?

Our kids are in hog heaven when Mr. Pig comes to visit!

We will truly miss this southern chain that has been, "local since forever." We're honored to be giving them WINGS and thankful to have had them in our flock. At WINGS, we know first-hand that pigs really do fly!
