Tired of hearing the same old answers when you ask: “How was school today?” Try a new approach with some open-ended questions.

Kids talk more about their school day
if you change approach.

At WINGS, the staff is trained to pose open-ended questions instead of queries that can be answered simply yes or no. These strategies can help kids open up about school instead of engaging in the exchanges that can be so frustrating for parents and offspring alike. Consider trying one or two of these questions – and be sure to spend more time listening than talking so your kid feels free to open up about what they’re feeling.

  • If you had to name one thing that you wish hadnt happened today, what would it be?
  • What are you looking forward to this week?
  • Tell me about one nice thing a friend did for you.
  • Whats the toughest part of your day? How do you deal with it?
  • Learn anything new?
  • Whod you sit with at lunch? What did you guys talk about?
  • Whats the most exciting part of your day?
  • What can you do tonight that will make your day easier tomorrow?
