Staying positive is a skill that kids can learn. At WINGS we use the Push and Pull as a constant reminder.

Learning to Accentuate the Positive and Eliminate the Negative

Part of becoming self-aware means teaching kids to recognize the need to encourage themselves, become conscious of negative thoughts and replace them with morale boosters. At WINGS we frequently tell the kids about positive self-talk. Using the Push and Pull helps them remember.

  • PUSH out the negative thoughts – and keep them out!
  • PULL in the positive thoughts – and stick to them!

It’s useful to help kids remember a time when people were cheering them on and supporting them or offering praise, and how great that made them feel. Explain that sometimes there’s no one to cheer you on or help you navigate a difficult situation. It’s important to know how to do it for yourself.

We tell them that when you talk yourself through a problem and stay positive, that’s known as positive self-talk. We give kids lots of opportunity to think up things to tell themselves so they can stay positive instead of turning negative and giving up.
