Get more than a one-word answer with Open-Ended Inquiries!

School's back in session—what an exciting time! Whether children are entering kindergarten, middle school, high school, or even college parents are curious as to what goes on inside classroom walls. Unfortunately, when it comes time to ask kids about their experiences, parents are often greeted with a shrug or "fine." We want more!

Break through the walls of one-word answers with Open-Ended Inquiries.

Examples:

Instead of Say
Did you have fun today? What was the best part of your day today?
Do you like your teacher? What's the best thing about your teacher? Worst?
Did you make any new friends? Tell me about 2 new kids you've met.
Did you behave today? Tell me about any challenges you had today with your behavior.
Did you learn anything new? Tell me two things you learned today.

Try these at home and let the conversation flow!

“The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.”

— Theodore Roosevelt
