WINGS’ Spirited Leader Takes Off!

After nearly fifteen years of soaring with WINGS—growing our organization from a summer camp for girls to a four-program operation reaching more than 450 kids a year—WINGS’ fearless founder and CEO, Ginny Deerin, will take flight from the organization she created.

Bridget Laird, who Ginny hired twelve years ago and currently serves as Executive Director at WINGS, has been named as Ginny’s successor. She’s innovative and thoughtful, and she’s just the person to carry WINGS into our next important phase of development.

“As I take off to do other things I feel a great sense of peace and joy,” says Ginny. “Of course my heart, interest, attention and connection will forever be with WINGS, but replacing its founder is one thing every organization must do to prove its strength. And like a proud mother, I can say that WINGS is ready to fly on its own without me.”

Under Ginny’s leadership, WINGS has earned national praise and accolades. Specifically, WINGS has been recognized as one of three outstanding programs worth emulating by Scholastic Magazine; received the highest award for excellence in nonprofit management by The South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations; taken home an Innovators award by Charleston Regional Business Journal, and most recently, earned praise by Edutopia, the online education resource created by the George Lucas Education Foundation, as a “School that Works.” The feature was written by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Grace Rubenstein.

As Ginny looks to take off, the Board of WINGS has created the Deerin Leadership Fund to honor WINGS’ spirited founder. The fund will support continued leadership development activities for WINGS kids and staff, and as Board President, Kate Huey says, the fund is fitting for Ginny.

“Ginny’s intention has always been to design an organization that encourages leadership skills in both kids and staff, and as a board member I feel privileged and proud to continue to be a part of that vision,” says Kate.
