Charlotte - Here We Come!
Fourth Replication Site Slated to Open August 2014

We're so happy to announce that we're growing to a new region and opening a new school next year in Charlotte, NC. Our WINGS program at Bruns Academy in the Charlotte-Mecklenberg School District will be lead by former WINGSLeader turned 2nd grade teacher, Jazzi Goode (pictured below as a WINGSLeader). After graduating from the College of Charleston, Jazzi taught 2nd grade for three years before making a return (and move!) to WINGS as Bruns' full-time Program Director. Jazzi will over see 15 college-aged AmeriCorps members (already recruited) who will serve as WINGSLeaders and 100 elementary-aged kids.

About Bruns Academy: Bruns is a Title I elementary school with an enrollment of 790 students and serves grades Pre-K through 8th grade.  Due to its failing history, Bruns is a part of the new Project L.I.F.T. Learning Community, where there is an increased focus on student achievement.  Bruns students are under-performing their peers academically: According to NC’s School Report Cards for the 2012-2013 school year (most recently reported data), standardized test scores (NC End-of-Grade Tests) show that Bruns' third, fourth, and fifth grade averages of “at or above grade level” are significantly lower than the district and state’s “at or above grade level” rates.

All kids need WINGS and the students of Bruns Academy are no exception. We're ready for the challenge of delivering WINGS to a hundred more kids in a brand-new city!

Thank You!

May 6th was Give Local America's online day of giving. WINGS participated in Lift The Lowcountry and raised more than $90,000 (that number hasn't been incentivized yet!) and blew past our goal of getting 80 gifts by nabbing 147 in 24 hours. THANK YOU, Friends!

Our friends at Ashoka featured WINGS as "an after school program that revolutionizes how we teach our kids empathy." See the post here.
