Meet Kendall

Kendall is a 3rd grader at Chicora School of Communications and is in his 3rd year with WINGS. Kendall's WINGLeader, Andrew recently shared how proud he was of Kendall for living the Creed through the line: Life's full of surprises that make me feel different ways. If I can control myself, I will have much better days.

During discussion time in the Falcon's nest, students were asked to share some of their strengths and weaknesses. While most of his nestmates expressed weaknesses like not being as fast a runner as they would like, or not throwing a ball as well as they would like, Kendall shared that he felt his weaknesses were picking on other people, getting upset too easily, and not always listening. Andrew thanked Kendall for his honesty and reflection, and pointed out that the ability to be self-aware and identify weaknesses is also a strength, and a start to changing his behavior.

Self-Management is a key learning objective at WINGS. 7 weeks are dedicated to the topic and among other life skills and lessons, kids learn about "emotional highjacking" and the consequences of it. Kids learn skills to identify emotional triggers and process their feelings, and effective ways to manage impulses and avoid losing control of their emotions. Kendall has pledged to work harder over the school year to avoid emotional highjackings and stay out of the Reflection Pond (time-out). He's realized that when he maintains control over his emotions and reacts in appropriate and productive ways, he does in fact have much better days!

Kendall, we are so proud of your self-awareness and your goal to improve on your self-management! We look forward to seeing your progress continue. You soar!

“Our children may learn about heroes of the past. Our task is to make ourselves architects of the future.”
