Meet De'Troy

De’Troy, one of our youngest WINGS kids, reminds us it’s never too early to start soaring. In just his first year at WINGS he’s mastering the social and emotional life lessons we’re teaching every day.

De'Troy is a kindergartener at North Charleston Elementary school, and WINGS staff there say he can best be summed up by one of the lines of our WINGS Creed—"I understand the choices I make should be what's best for me to do, and what happens is on me and not any of you."

The youngster, who was described as quite shy when he started the year with us at WINGS, is now said to be much more comfortable "letting his WINGS out"—or rather, he's now a pro at interacting with new people and making them feel welcome.

De'Troy is known as a peacekeeper among his Robins nest, and he's one of the first to step up and offer to help.

A good example of his progress occurred recently when De'Troy approached his WINGSLeader, Sean McCants, with something he was really hoping his mother would give him. Sean asked De'Troy what he would have to do to get the prize he was wishing for, and Sean encouraged De'Troy to work with his mom to make an agreement. If he improved his grades like he promised, perhaps De'Troy would receive the prize if he reached his goal.

This kind of progress is what we're hoping for from each of the 450 kids we serve every year, and we love hearing reports of these skills impacting kids' behavior for the better at home as well.

Keep soaring, De'Troy... we know you're headed for great things!
