My Life as a VISTA
Hello everyone! My name is Nicole and this year I am serving with WINGS for kids as the AmeriCorps VISTA. My projects this year focus on increasing parent/teacher involvement and community engagement.
First, let me tell you a little about myself.
This past August, I moved from my hometown of Columbus, Ohio to Charleston, SC to accept the amazing opportunity to work with WINGS for kids. I am a recent graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Child and Family Studies. Since I was little, I have always enjoyed helping others. I receive great happiness from seeing others succeed and being a part of their solutions. I applied to AmeriCorps because I wanted the opportunity to expand my volunteering experience and also help fight the war against poverty. I am a firm believer that no matter the situation a person is currently in, there is always hope for the future. I live with my boyfriend, who is a Chef, and our two cats, Max and Ollie. We are expecting our first child on April 7th:)
I am so happy that I was chosen as the 2014-2015 AmeriCorps VISTA with WINGS for kids. After learning about this non-profit after school program, I instantly felt a connection with the mission and goals of the organization. I was even happier to be welcomed with such warm and open arms by my supervisor and all of my co-workers. Although I still consider myself the “new kid”, I already feel like a member of the WINGS family because the WINGS culture is so supportive and positive. Throughout my year of service, I will be blogging about parent engagement topics, community resources, and anything related to family well-being. I look forward to my journey as a VISTA and I hope that my postings can provide some useful and interesting information!
