WINGS Stands Alone
There are more than 80 organizations in the country dedicated
to social and emotional education in the classroom; WINGS is the only
organization totally dedicated to social and emotional learning after
school—a great place to do this teaching.
Let’s
face it: teachers are
busy and it’s hard to get them to think of anything
new these days. High stakes testing is taking its toll.
In sharp contrast,
youth leaders are looking for ways to enrich their programs—and they
have the time.
WINGS has two major initiatives:
- Memminger Elementary School
- WINGS Developmental Partners
Adding WINGS to any afterschool program makes
the program better. The
greatest challenge for the afterschool program field is quality. There
is a national consensus that the quality of children’s relationships
with afterschool program staff and their relationships with each other
are the key to quality. This is what WINGS is all about: developing
skills that add up to strong relationships.
Today, Wings is working to deliver WINGS to afterschool
programs. 2005-06
marked the beginning of the second phase in the development of WINGS.
In our first phase, we developed WINGS; in our second, we’ll
learn how to deliver it. To explain the development of WINGS, we sometimes
use the analogy of the development of a prescription drug.
It begins
in the lab where the company develops the drug. In the second phase,
the drug is taken out of the lab to “test drive” it in
the real world (clinical trial sites.) During this time, the drug
companies may learn things to help them make the drug even better.
In the next
phase of development the drug is rigorously researched by scientists
to prove its effectiveness. And finally, the drug is delivered to
the public. Today, WINGS is in its “clinical trial” phase.
This school year, we have 8 clinical trial sites called WINGS Developmental Partners. |
