At WINGS we're focused on providing kids with the social and emotional tools they need to soar well into adulthood. But an added bonus for us is being able to reach our WINGS staff with those same life skills. Keisha Jones, who soared on our staff for five years – two as a WINGSLeader and three as a Program Director – proves that being socially and emotionally sound can help you tackle anything life throws your way.

One of the most quoted lines of our WINGS Creed states, "Life's full of surprises that make me feel different ways. If I control myself I'll have much better days." It's one of the stanzas WINGS' staff and kids try extra hard to live by, and one that Keisha proves can indeed help in even the toughest of circumstances.

Back in June, Keisha, who now lives in Washington, D.C. and works in a Charter School there, gave birth to her second child, a baby boy who was born 13 weeks premature. Keisha continued to care for her four-year-old daughter while visiting the hospital every day to feed her newborn, who was required to stay under the care of the hospital for his first two months.

By September baby Darius was finally home, and Keisha was back to work. She wasn't back to work long; however, before she was involved in a major car accident that left her leg shattered and required her to undergo several surgeries. Now more than three months later, Keisha is still not able to walk, and is just now able to put weight back on her leg.

This chain of events is enough to throw even the strongest person off kilter, but what makes Keisha stand out is the positive outlook she's maintained all along her way. In spite of everything she has faced, she continues to take the time to count her blessings for all the positive things and people in her life. She even launched a "Thanks Campaign" on her Facebook page, where she counts the many blessings and individuals she's grateful for each day.

Keisha has remained one of WINGS' biggest fans, and it is safe to say that we too have remained one of hers. It is our hope that all our WINGS kids leave our program able to tackle anything that comes their way with the same grace and confidence as Keisha has demonstrated.

Keep soaring, Keisha!

"While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us."
