WINGSLeader Snapshot

Amy Hudacko, 21

WINGSLeaders are AmeriCorps members that are actively enrolled in college. For 2-4 years they mentor and teach elementary age, at-risk kids powerful lessons in social and emotional learning (SEL) while inevitably strengthening their own skills and character. We've seen them soar on to promising careers including principals, teachers, lawyers, marketing execs, youth development workers, and guidance counselors.

These young leaders are a bright light in our future world. Studies show 90% of top workplace performers have high Emotional Intelligence (EQ). This impact is so deep that we recently addressed and added its effect to our Theory of Change.

I am a: Senior at College of Charleston

Major: Special Education       Minor: English

WINGer since: 2010

What career or field are you looking to pursue after graduation?
I love working with kids and I either want to continue on with WINGS or become a Special Ed teacher for kids with intellectual disabilities. I used to work with the kids at my high school with severe mental disabilities, and I loved being around them because they're so loving.

What have you learned through your service at WINGS?
I've learned that I am more patient than I thought! I've also learned that you never know what someone has gone or is going through and to always try your best to treat them with compassion and dignity.

Has WINGS changed you in any way (habits, behavior, interactions, perspective, etc.) and how?
WINGS has definitely made me more organized, but mostly it's helped me believe more in myself and my abilities. The lessons we teach the kids are only absorbed by them if we model them, so serving with WINGS really makes you step it up as a person.

What is your favorite part of WINGS?
Oh my gosh! All of it! I love these kids and they love right back. My favorite moments are when you witness a child change their behavior to be more positive and you know that you have succeeded in teaching them about kindness and responsibility.

What her Program Director Says:
Amy is a ray of sunshine! She is super supportive to everyone and very self and socially aware. She is a trooper in the midst of chaos and does all she can to improve tough situations while motivating others to do the same. She is a natural leader.
