WINGS teaches social and emotional smarts to kids
What We Do
For 10 years, WINGS has been the only U.S. organization focused solely on social and emotional learning within afterschool programs. Through small lessons carefully woven into everyday activities, WINGS helps kids understand themselves, behave responsibly, form positive relationships and make good decisions.
Why It Works
Our field-tested strategies, practices and materials have the power to strengthen connection to school and diminish self-defeating behavior – the two factors that educational research shows will determine whether kids succeed. Evaluations by researchers from Yale University and the University of South Carolina have found improvements in measures including absenteeism, tardiness and teacher evaluations of social development.
Where It Started
Since its beginnings in Charleston, S.C., in 1996, WINGS has grown to serve more than 1,200 kids. Memminger Elementary School is the learning laboratory where strategies are developed and tested. WINGS also collaborates with eight additional afterschool programs in Charleston and Washington, D.C.
